Martin R. Correa from Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico is Las Artes' Artist-in-Residence. Martin is a papier-mâché (Cartoneria) artist, and art instructor at the University of Guanajuato. Martin has recently acted as Curator for several exhibits and installations for the Mexican government as well as the University. He recently served as an adviser and instructor to the Nebraska’s Sheldon Art Museum for their 2007 Dia De Los Muertos celebration. He also serves as artistic and technical advisor for "Hollywood Forever", a yearly Dia De Los Muertos event in Los Angeles, CA. Martin continues to serve as Artist-in-Residence for Las Artes Cultural Center in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. As a part of this role Martin has taught Latino arts and culture to students and faculty within Omaha’s public school system.
Martin R. Correa created "Ancestors Close to the Heart", a collection of images providing the public an opportunity to express respect and admiration of their ancestors. Each one of these images when paired with the image of a Father, Mother, Aunt, or other loved one, who has passed, is a memorial to how important they were in our lives as well as how much they are remembered and loved. When worn so close to the heart, the memory represented by this Keepsake can be a source of comfort and confidence when the world around us becomes a lonely place.
